Culturally Competent and Diversity-Sensitive Practice and Cultural Humility 59 It is important for the instructor to reinforce a point that we make in this chapter. We tell our students, “Expanding your social network doesn’t mean that if you’re a person of color, you ‘have’ to find a person of a different color or who is white to be friends with, or if you’re straight, you ‘have’ to befriend some- one who identifies as LGBTQ or vice versa, in order to be a good social worker. Rather, it means that we seek to expand our network of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances so that we can experience the world of ‘others’ firsthand.”
