authors and contributors Charles D. Garvin, Ph.D., is professor emeritus at the School of Social Work, University of Michigan. He has taught in both masters and doc- toral programs and is a past director of the Joint Doctoral Program in Social Work and Social Science. Many of his numerous articles concern small groups, and his books include three editions of Contemporary Group Work, two editions of Interpersonal Practice in Social Work, and two editions of Social Work in Contemporary Society, all published by Allyn & Bacon. He is the co-editor of Direct Practice, published by Sage, and of the journal Small Group Research. Bageshwari Parihar, Ph.D., is a partner and CEO of Therapeutic Inter- ventions, Inc., a substance-abuse treatment center, and director of the Rolling Meadows Counseling Services, which provides counseling and consultation services, in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. He has also been Deputy Director of Programs at Englewood Community Mental Health Organization and an administrator at Martha Washington Hospital Alcoholism Treatment Center. He has taught social work at Louisiana State University and at Kashi Vidyapith in India. He has written Task-Centered Management in Human Services, as well as a number of articles in the areas of management and alcoholism. Gregory L.
