To the abuse survivors we have known: Thank you for teaching us the mean-
ing of resiliency and determination to survive. Although you share many
common experiences, we hope this book helps us to better understand your
unique circumstances and journeys to safety and community.
To our chapter contributors: Thank you for graciously sharing your passionate
commitment and expertise for working with women from diverse communi-
ties who face violence and abuse. This book would not have been possible
without your collaborative efforts.
To my parents, Berlin and Martha S. Lockhart, Sr., and my siblings (William
Earl, Freddie Morris, Berlin, Jr., and Barbara Ann) for the perpetual love, sup-
port, and encouragement that you have shown me throughout my personal
and professional adventures. Also, thanks to all my friends for their support.
For your encouragement, support, and unconditional love: My partner, Judith
M. Turner, and my family: Suzanne Danis and Martin Podgainy, Elaine,
Matthew and Andrew Cramer, and Bob, Mary Ann, and Sam Stillerman.
